The U.S. Department of energy proposes to limit or ban the import of Russian uranium for reasons of national security. This is stated in a statement Thursday the report of the Ministry, which is quoted by TASS.
“The United States has lost competitive advantage as a global leader in nuclear energy among the world’s state-owned companies. Russia and China, among other States, are actively trying to beat our country”, – stated in the document.
In this regard, the office recommends that the U.S. nuclear regulatory Commission to ban the import of nuclear fuel produced by Russia and China. The report notes that the state enterprise “TVEL”, included in the structure of Rosatom state Corporation, in 2008 launched a project to replace the fuel for existing U.S. reactors, and can develop this practice in the near future. “If this happens, the task group would support an order to restrict or ban the import of nuclear fuel from Russia or China for reasons of national security,” the authors report.
Company “TVEL” unites enterprises of nuclear fuel fabrication, conversion and enrichment, manufacturing of gas centrifuges, as well as research and development organizations. It is the only supplier of nuclear fuel for Russian NPPs, provides nuclear fuel 78 power reactors in 15 countries, research reactors in nine States, as well as transport reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet.
Agreement suspending the antidumping investigation of uranium from Russia was signed in 1992, and the number of amendments in 1994, 1996, 1997 and 2008. Existing supplies of Russian uranium products to the American market is limited to certain quotas. These measures regulating “commercial exports of Russian uranium”, sold directly or through intermediaries for U.S. companies in recent times were identified in 2008. Quotas under the agreement are valid until the end of 2020. Otherwise, Russian suppliers threaten compulsory payments in the amount of 115,82%.
