Defense logistics Agency, the Pentagon announced a tender to conduct market research “Arctic circle with subsequent reports.”
In the list of regions where research is needed include the Kolguev island, Yamal, Murmansk oblast, archipelago Severnaya Zemlya, the Republic of Sakha (Yakutiya) and Novosibirsk Islands. In addition to the Russian territories, the list also includes Greenland, Alaska, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Finland.
The document referenced by the RIA “Novosti”, said that the research reports should contain information about how these regions are supplied bottled water, food, clothing, petroleum products and medicines, as well as information about the presence in each of these places the natural resources and materials.
In addition, contractors will need to compile a list of commonly used ports, roads, railway traffic and of airports with their characteristics.
The purpose of these studies, according to U.S. Department of defense, is to improve the ability of the commercial sector around the world “to meet the mobilization needs of the U.S. government in the event of an emergency”. The data obtained will be used in the framework of the industrial base extension (IBex), which aimed at collecting data about the capabilities of commercial companies around the world to facilitate the operations of the American army and help her work on elimination of consequences of natural disasters.
At the Pentagon the last few years are seriously concerned that the Russian authorities are expanding the activities of the armed forces of the Russian Federation in the Arctic, continued militarization of the region, and actively explore the natural resources in these areas.
In Russia developed a new strategy of development of the Arctic by 2035. By 2020 it is planned to deploy in the Arctic interspecific grouping of troops, able to respond to existing and emerging threats and to protect national interests in the Arctic region in the field of military, economic and transport security. The share of the Arctic already accounts for more than 10% of all investment in Russia, and a value of “Arctic factor,” the economy of Russia is growing every year. The defense Ministry created to coordinate activities in the Arctic a new “military district” – the joint strategic command North in the Arctic opened research and testing research center, created or already operate 13 airports, prepared dozens of military icebreakers, more than ten are under construction. Moscow also said the deployment in the Arctic, a new anti-aircraft missile systems s-400 “Triumph”. All this suggests that Russia’s military presence in the Arctic has reached unprecedented levels since the end of the cold war.
At the same time, U.S. and NATO miss the Arctic from view. In this situation, in may 2019 and the command of the Armed forces (AF), the United States turned to Washington with the requirement to actively increase the military potential of the United States in the Arctic, as in the case of a military conflict with Russia, this direction will remain “naked”. For this Northern command of the U.S. armed forces demanded the immediate “expansion of operations” in the Arctic.
