December 24 and 25 sociological center “Pulse” conducted a study that showed that 81% of the residents of Odessa are strongly against the dismantling of the monument to the Founders of the city.

It is reported by the Timer.

Details on the results of the survey told reporters the Director of “Pulse” Elena Knyazeva, the reason for the study was a lawsuit from the Association “Sich”, filed in the Odessa appellate court and demanding the monument be removed. The survey was conducted on the street by the technique of “face-to-face”, and was attended by 800 respondents (18 years and older).

“The sampling by controlled social characteristics – gender, age, area of residence is a sufficiently accurate model of the adult population of the city”, – explained Elena Knyazeva.

She recalled that “Pulse” systematically monitors the dynamics of the relationship of the monument to Odessa on Ekaterininskaya square (the first study conducted in July 1995, when 63% of citizens voted to return the monument to the Empress and her companions to the square where it originally was erected).

In July 2007, November 2007 and April 2008 were polls that showed the growing number of those who approve of the decision of the Odessa city Council about the restoration of the monument to Catherine II. Elena Knyazeva emphasized that the December opinion poll of this year only confirmed this trend.

“View of Odessa in the last ten years has been further strengthened: the vast majority – 81% of respondents are categorically against the demolition of the monument and another 12% are rather against it”, – said the Director of the research center.

However, only 2% of respondents unequivocally supported the claim of the Association “Sich”, supported also 2%, and undecided 4%. In addition, as reported by Elena Knyazeva, 80 % of Odessa praised the Empress Catherine II.

“Such a high rating is recognition of her services to the Odessa, as the founder of the city”, – said the expert.

During the survey the residents also asked how they relate to the Hetman Ivan Mazepa, and found that the positive opinion expressed by 13% of respondents, but rather a positive – 21%. This negatively he was treated 22% of citizens, and the Empress Catherine to perceive bad only 4% of Odessa.

“As you can see, the idea of the demolition of the monument is absolutely not correlated with the mood of the citizens of Odessa”, – concluded Knyazev.
