“We need a credible deterrent, so that one fine day Russia has not attacked another European country as Ukraine”, – he said. However, he said that Russia and Latvia are neighbors who “share common economic interests.”
According to Vejonis, most of the ethnic Russians living in Latvia, loyal to the authorities and the course of the country. “But some of them are more prone to attempts of Moscow to exert pressure on our country. Some of them, for example, participate in demonstrations against the planned law on the consolidation of the Latvian language in education,” he said.

The President stressed that one should not underestimate the influence of Russia in Latvia, because many citizens are “watching Russian television, the Russian government is trying to influence the Russian media in our country, running its propaganda.”
Vejonis also spoke about the project of construction of gas pipeline “Nord stream-2” which will pass from Russia to Germany. “The Chancellor [Angela Merkel] knows that all the Baltic countries from the beginning was strongly against this project and that our position has not changed. In our view, “Nord stream-2″ is primarily a geopolitical project of Russia. Meanwhile, Germany and France agreed on the compromise, it is a good basis for a common European path in energy policy”, – said the President.
Speaking of the may elections to the European Parliament, Vejonis noted that the Kremlin is trying to strengthen the Pro-Russian forces in this European on and seeking the division of Europe. “All Democrats should be prepared for that. It is important to make it clear to citizens that they face a critical election, we are talking about our future,” the President said.
