The non-renewal of Ukraine’s Treaty of friendship and cooperation with Russia is regrettable Kremlin, said press Secretary of the President Dmitry Peskov.
It is reported by RIA Novosti.
“One thing is clear – it is unlikely that this step can be regarded as a step in the interests of Ukrainians – the Ukrainians, with whom we have ties of kinship and brotherly relations, no matter what,” he said.

We will remind, the Agreement on friendship, cooperation and partnership between Russia and Ukraine was signed on 31 may 1997, another Leonid Kuchma and Boris Yeltsin. In January 1998, the document was ratified by the Verkhovna Rada, and in December the state Duma of the Russian Federation. The Treaty entered into force on 1 April 1999 for a period of 10 years with automatic renewal for the next ten-year periods in the absence of objections of the parties. In late 2008, the agreement was automatically extended for 10 years.

28 August 2018 President Petro Poroshenko announced the termination of the Treaty of friendship for the next 10-year period. September 6, the corresponding decision was approved by the national security Council and defense of Ukraine. A decree on the introduction of the NSDC decision on the non-renewal of the agreement Poroshenko signed on September 17.
September 21, foreign Ministry sent an official note to Moscow about the non-renewal of the Treaty of friendship, and already on September 26, Poroshenko conveyed to the UN Secretary General Antonio Gutteres note about Ukraine’s decision not to renew the Treaty of friendship with Russia.
On 6 December, the Verkhovna Rada supported the presidential bill”About the termination of the Agreement on friendship, cooperation and partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation”.
On 10 December President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed the bill.
