Supporters of EU membership won the elections in the North of Macedonia
The ruling in Northern Macedonia, the coalition “We can” led party “Social democratic Union of Macedonia” (SDSM), which is led by Zoran Zaev, took the most seats in the elections of the new composition of the 120-seat Parliament, held on Wednesday 15 Jul, RBC.
After processing 90% of the votes, the coalition is gaining 36,15% of the votes, which guarantees its members 46 of the 120 seats in Parliament.
Only two seats lost to the leader of the opposition coalition, led by the party of the “Internal Macedonian revolutionary organization – Democratic party for Macedonian national unity”. She is gaining, according to preliminary data, 34,73%. The third result (11,5% of the voters) received the party “Democratic Union for integration”, which reflects the interests of the local Albanians. In total, the Parliament passed the six parties.
According to the electoral Commission North of Macedonia, the right to vote had about 1.8 million people. An election was April 12, but because of the pandemic, COVID-19 was postponed to July.
From 2017 to January 2020 Zaev was Prime Minister and resigned to held early parliamentary elections. He was one of the architects of the Prespan agreement with Greece, the signing of which ended its three decade dispute with Athens because of the name, to prevent the entry of Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia in the European Union and NATO. In March this year Northern Macedonia became the 30th member of NATO, the accession negotiations with the EU continue.
To hold early elections Zaev and his associates decided after the European Union refused to start negotiations on membership of the North of Macedonia: opposed by France due to the insufficient fight against corruption. Zaev called the decision a mistake and decided to trust the citizens to choose the future political course of the election.
