Belarus was the only country in the former Soviet Union, where it held a large military parade in honor of the 75th anniversary of Victory in the great Patriotic war. In the parade were more than 3 thousand soldiers and over 150 vehicles. Over Minsk has flown over 40 aircraft and helicopters, BelTA informs.

The parade came and veterans. Only some of the people present were wearing masks. President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko on the occasion, was dressed in a military uniform. In his speech, he said that the country could not dispense with the holding of the parade, despite the coronavirus.

“In this crazy, lost world, there are people condemning us for the time and place of holding this sacred action. Want to tell them properly: not rush to conclusions, and especially to condemn us, the heirs of Victory, the Belarusians… We just couldn’t help it, we had no other choice. But if I did, we would have done the same,” – said Lukashenko.

“The tragedy of the Belarusian people, who carried on his shoulders the Herculean burden of loss and destruction most brutal war of the twentieth century, commensurate with any difficulties of the present day. Even the idea to change traditions that have 75 years of glorified history of the great feat of the winners for us are unacceptable,” – said the Belarusian leader.

He noted that was held in honor of all the Soviet soldiers and the allies who liberated the world from Nazism. “We bow before the feat of the Russian and Belarusians, Ukrainians and Jews, Tatars and Kazakhs, Tajiks and Uzbeks, Kyrgyz and Turkmens, Georgians, Armenians, Azerbaijanis and Moldovans, Latvians, Lithuanians, Estonians – all the people of the Soviet Union, the fighters of the Resistance movement of Europe, our allies – the U.S., Britain and China. Their courage, bravery and willingness to die for their country, became a terrible weapon of retribution for the Nazi executioners and their satellites,” – said Lukashenko.

Russia on parade in Minsk was represented by the Ambassador of the Russian Federation Dmitry Mezentsev.

In the evening in Minsk will also host the concert “the glory of total Victory!” which will perform national academic folk choir of Belarus named after G. I. Tsitovich, the State academic ensemble of dance of Belarus, ensemble “Pesnyary”, “Kupalinka”, “spadchina”, “Laytsaund”, military bands and performers, soloists of the Bolshoi theatre of Belarus, Belarusian stars and young laureates of national and international competitions.

On 7 may, the Director of the European regional office of the world health organization (who) Hans Kluge expressed concern about the increasing number of cases infected with coronavirus last week in Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine. He praised the leadership of the countries that “made a courageous decision” to defer or adjust the celebration of Victory Day. “We respect this historic date, but it really is time to search for alternative solutions that would not jeopardize the lives of the population,” said Kluge (quoted by TASS).

Earlier, the world health organization has expressed particular concern about the participation in the parade in Minsk the elderly who are at risk for coronavirus. Lukashenko did not impose any restrictions on visiting the parade, saying only that veterans were asked “not to insist” to take them to the celebration, as it is usually done.
