Klimkin called on the international community for tougher action against North Korea
Uncategorized December 16, 2017KIEV. 15 Dec. UNN. Foreign Minister of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin urged the international community to tougher policies against nuclear threats from North Korea. He said this, speaking at the Ministerial meeting of the UN security Council, reports UNN.
“Recent events, in particular, the launch of an ICBM in the last month, indicate that Pyongyang is not interested in the resumption of negotiations. We support the opinion, shared by most of the people at this table that the full implementation of Security Council resolutions can bring us closer to changing this trend. Before that happens, Council should be prepared to introduce additional measures in the event of new provocations,” — said the Minister.
According to him, the crisis on the Korean Peninsula has global implications, and raises questions how the international community can prevent nuclear threats in the future in other parts of the globe.
“In my opinion, the case of North Korea contains two important lessons for the international community. First, it shows what can happen when irresponsible actors get weapons of mass destruction. Today Pyongyang’s blackmailing the entire region, threatening to use its nuclear and missile capabilities without thinking about the possible consequences and impact,” — said Klimkin.
The Minister also stressed that the Parliament is becoming increasingly difficult to consistently respond to such calls. According to him, the world is now watching “the policy of double standards and the unwillingness of some countries to acknowledge that the regime of North Korea is a real threat.”
“This brings me to the second lesson: the soft policy of appeasement of the aggressive ambitions never works. In addition, criminals only encourages concessions and inaction of the international community”, — said the Minister.
He recalled the strained relations between the two countries in the period before the II World, as well as topical now heightened security concerns in Europe and the world.
“The international community must therefore demonstrate a clear and uncompromising stance in the protection of international law, wherever and by whoever it is broken. This position should not be limited to declarations about the necessity of the protection of human rights, peace and security. We need action, quick and appropriate answers”, — he stressed.
As reported UNN, Japan imposed additional sanctions against the DPRK.
