In the United States next week before the military will appear in court the soldier of the Navy, accused of passing classified information to a friend the citizen of Russia.

Newspaper the Virginian-Pilot reported, citing court documents, that chief petty officer Charles T. Briggs, who works in the field of information and technology at the naval medical center Portsmouth (Virginia), is charged with unauthorized dissemination of classified information obtained from government computer in January 2019.

What information he gave and how he met with the Russians, the documents are not given, however, noted that these data could be used to “harm the United States or to benefit a foreign citizen.” At the time Briggs was at the airbase of Offutt in Nebraska.

According to the court, the military had access to information about national defense several times from October 2018 to January 2019. It is also noted that Briggs was not informed about his involvement with the citizens of Russia and Italy, and lied, answering the question whether he is close and continuing contacts with foreign nationals. In addition, he reported on his visit to Serbia and provided false documents that during a holiday in 2018 remained in Nebraska.

Briggs also is charged with obstruction of justice, transmitting defense information, storage and attempt to view child pornography, two cases of violation of the General rules and three cases of making false official statements. The soldier is in pretrial detention. It is expected that on July 22 he was formally charged.
