“Now through NPP “Tuzlovsky limans” is the intense migration of birds from the South. Among them, and ferruginous duck. A flock of these ducks photographed in the estuary of the Alkali, which flows into the waters of the estuary Burnas, which are part of NPP “Tuzlovsky limans”. All of them, there rare ducks with white as enamel eyes, with a tiny black dot of the pupil in the middle, impressively contrasting with the chocolate brown body of a bird, was 25 individuals,” wrote Rusev.
At the same time, he noted that specific eye is characteristic of males only – females have the same grey-brown eyes, and painted it, according to the ecologist, more modest.
“This duck in recent decades rarely see not only ordinary people, but also expert watchers. The number of ferruginous pochard rapidly shrinking habitat is fragmented. The main threat to the existence of this species of duck is the loss of wetlands. In several places its habitat is shrinking,” said Rusev.
In addition, in his words, ferruginous ducks often become the object of hunting.
“The continued slaughter of birds leads to a reduction in number of individuals. Ferruginous duck belongs to the category of globally threatened species included in the Red book of Ukraine, international Red book, included in Annex II of the Bonn Convention,” – said the ecologist.
He said that these ducks mainly herbivorous. They feed on seeds and aquatic plants, which collect on the surface of the pond or on the beach.
Also, ferruginous ducks, like most ducks eat invertebrates, which are caught in the middle of the lake. It may be insects and their larvae, crustaceans and molluscs.
As reported by UNN, in early April, on the Kinburnsky spit, located between the Dnieper-bug Liman and the Black sea, returned pelicans.
