In the European Parliament discussed the increase of “chicken” quotas for Ukraine
KIEV. On 2 April. UNN. Recently held session of the European Parliament Committee on international trade, reports UNN referring to the Polish edition of Polsat News.
During the meeting, deputies discussed the results of a preliminary agreement between Ukraine and the EU on increasing import quotas for Ukrainian chicken – from 20 thousand tons to 70 thousand tons per year.
Many MEPs agreed that the export of Ukrainian poultry to the EU reached record levels. Therefore, to increase the quota on import of products impractical.
“We understand the situation with Ukraine, we are for Ukraine, for farmers, real farmers. But we can’t take actions that make use of the gaps (in law) and wear some matching character”, – said the MEP Czeslaw Sekerci.
At the Committee meeting was attended by the representative of the European Commission. He noted that the increase in quotas is a rational decision. Stressed that the export of chicken meat from the EU to Ukraine is 180 thousand tons, and in the opposite direction is 120 thousand tons.
However, not all considered these arguments convincing. As Chairman of the Committee on international trade Bernd Lange, the decision on further action will be taken at a meeting of the coordinators of the political groups.
Recall, Ukraine in the past year rose to sixth place in the global ranking of suppliers of chicken. In the EU, Ukraine occupies the third place among exporters, behind only Brazil and Thailand. However, even these powerful rivals Ukraine intends to get ahead.
In early March it became known that the European Commission is planning at least to double the import quotas for Ukrainian poultry. International press links this unprecedented step with Yuri Kosyuk (MHP), which is “its a stroke of genius” forced Europe to revise its trade policy towards Ukraine.
