In the Council of Europe urged Russia to investigate allegations of torture in Chechnya

KIEV. March 11. UNN. The Committee of the Council of Europe on the fight against torture urged Russia to conduct effective investigation of allegations of torture in the North Caucasus, particularly in Chechnya. About it UNN reported, citing the Committee’s statement.

“The Committee of the Council of Europe on prevention of torture and inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment has published today a public statement on the Russian Federation, which urged the Russian authorities to take resolute measures to eradicate ill-treatment by law enforcement officers in the Chechen Republic and other parts of the North Caucasus region of the Russian Federation, including by carrying out effective investigations in case of detection of relevant information”, – stated in the message.

Speaking from the public statement, the first Vice-President mark Kelly said: “the Committee has serious concern that despite the efforts he has made in the last 20 years, the torture of detainees in the Chechen Republic remain deeply rooted problem”.

“It speaks not only about breach of duties by state authorities, but also the lack of effective supervision and control at the Federal level,” added Kelly.

Recall, the EU called persistent violators of human rights ORDA and Russia.
