Research center for the study of medical marijuana opened on Tuesday at the University of Rangsit in Thailand, reports TASS with reference to the newspaper “Khaosod”.
The main objective of the center is the development of high quality medical marijuana. The rector of the University said that the school had recently allowed to grow marijuana to find or improve the strains that are most appropriate for medical research. “We’ll find the best varieties to maximize production and achieve reasonable prices,” he explained.
The rector added that the plantation of the University not intended for mass production, since their capacity is only about 50 plants.
However, the Director of the center for Surang Lilavati noted that its experts are currently studying possible options for the use of extracts of cannabis for treatment of cancer patients.
Prior to the legalization of medical cannabis Rangsit University was the only institution in Thailand which is authorised to conduct research on marijuana. In April 2018, scientists of the University presented the oral spray of marijuana that can be used for pain relief in patients with cancer or multiple sclerosis.
On 20 February this year entered into force amendments to the drugs Act of 1979, authorizing the use of cannabis for medical and research purposes.
In addition, within the Kingdom are now allowed to legally grow marijuana in the agricultural, commercial and industrial purposes, but under strict supervision of the authorities. Marijuana can have scientists, doctors, practitioners of Thai traditional medicine, red cross workers, local farmers who have received permission from the state, and foreign patients who need it for treatment.
According to research by the Ministry of health of Thailand, the extract of marijuana is effective in treating the symptoms of certain physical conditions, including peripheral neuropathy, epilepsy and muscle rigidity.
