Sunday, January 6, in Saudi Arabia comes into force a decree requiring women to notify about the divorce by SMS. About it reports the Russian service of the BBC.
Thus, the authorities decided to overcome the practice of “secret divorce”, when the husbands are not told to wives on the termination of marriage.
According to human rights activists, knowing their marital status will enable women to better protect their rights.
“The new measure will allow women to observe their rights upon divorce. It also ensures that the power of attorney before the divorce will not be illegally used,” said Saudi lawyer Nasrin al-Ghamdi.
“Many women have appealed to the court, due to the fact that men are simply not told them about the divorce,” added the lawyer Samia al-Hindi.

Innovation in the divorce process is part of an ambitious economic and social reforms carried out by Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
However, despite some improvement in gender inequality in the country, Saudi women still do not have the right without the permission of a male guardian to do many things. In particular: to apply for a passport to go abroad, get married, open a Bank account, to do elective surgery to leave the prison.
Recall, for 2018 the women in Saudi Arabia got the right to drive cars, visit football matches and to work in some professions that were previously available only to men, and foreigners were allowed to visit Saudi Arabia without a male escort.
