Uncategorized January 27, 2018Police in Kiev detained malefactors who kidnapped two people and demanded a ransom of cryptocurrency – bitcoin. The ransom amount was the equivalent of $ 5 million. As the press service of the national police, told the chief of criminal investigation Department of the NPU Sergey Tikhonov.
“Intruders identified, now they conduct investigations. At the same time, we are actively working on to establish other participants of the criminal group and bring them to justice,” he said.
According to Tikhonov, in the result, the police released the hostages, who were held in captivity for several months.
He noted that in 2017, the police recorded 507 criminal proceedings on the fact of kidnapping, 386 attackers already reported about suspicion. In four cases, the attackers demanded a ransom in the form of cryptocurrency.
“For the last time have four cases of kidnapping with a ransom demand in e-currency. The crime took place in Kiev, Vinnitsa and Odessa” – said Tikhonov.
In this scheme, he said, attackers are attracted by the opportunity to obtain the ransom without the risk of being identified. The kidnappers contacted relatives of the victim who are willing to pay the ransom, sometimes even in other countries.
