District (Boulevard Emile Jacqmain in the centre of Brussels) was surrounded by police officers and emergency services on the street.

One of the witnesses, Ryan McDonald, said that he heard the sound of a gunshot. Another witness said he heard two loud explosions and sirens.

It is unclear whether the assailant survived. He rushed at the soldier with a knife. Brussels police did not immediately reported the incident.
