Germany officially proposed to the member countries of the European Union to impose sanctions against the Russian Federation for the cyber attack on German Bundestag, tells Deutsche Welle.

A document confirming the initiative of Germany, was in the hands of the journalists of the German news Agency dpa is the government’s response to the request of the faction “Left party” in the German Parliament. It States that “the Federal government has justified the proposal on the introduction of sanctions in the EU by the input received from intelligence agencies, and from public sources.”

The German government believes that cyber attacks on the Bundestag involved in the Russian military intelligence service GRU.

The EU decision is still not accepted. If the German proposal is accepted, this will be the first case of application of the sanctions regime of the EU for cyber attacks – legislation enacted in 2017.

In late may, the Russian Ambassador was summoned to the German foreign Ministry in connection with the case of the hacker attack on the Bundestag. At the same time a warrant was issued for the arrest of Russian Dmitry Badin, who was allegedly “a member of the hacker group and led a cyber attack”.

Berlin later said that possible sanctions against Moscow on the case of attack on the Bundestag intended to limit entry of the responsible persons on the territory of the European Union.
