The Deputy head of the Ministry of justice Denis Chernyshev said that in 2017 in the penitentiary system of Ukraine there were no recorded instances of torture. About it reports a press-service of the Ministry.

“In the penitentiary system of Ukraine in the past year, there have been cases of torture,” said Chernyshev.

He noted that this statement is based on data of the European Committee for the prevention of torture, which in December completed the work in Ukraine and provided their insights.

“My words may be perceived as biased, so we rely on the findings of the International Committee of the red cross and the European Committee for the prevention of torture, which in December was with us. None of the institutions that they visited had no complaints regarding the use of physical force. In addition, it is noted that the power in institutions is satisfactory. So I can say that in 2017, the torture was not”, – said Chernyshov.

Earlier human rights organization Amnesty International Ukraine stated that Ukrainian law enforcement agencies continue to use torture.

We will remind, in August of 2017 to the Odessa prison after the murder of employees of companies EN masse and beat the prisoners. This fact is acknowledged in the Prosecutor’s office of Odessa region. According to the results of the audit, an investigation was initiated criminal proceedings under part 2 of article 365 of the criminal code of Ukraine (abuse of power or office powers which was accompanied by violence, acts which offend the personal pride of the victim).
