Arrow Nicholas Cruz, who killed 17 people in a school in Parkland, Florida, faces a sentence of death, due to historical peculiarities of the state in the adjudication of such crimes. According to The Wall Street Journal.
“Lawyers who seek to avoid the execution of Nicholas Cruz for the shooting last week in school, Parkland (Florida), may prove to be a significant obstacle – a historic number issued in the state of the death penalty, which puts him in second place by their number in the USA”, – stated in the message.
The magazine reports that the public defender of Broward County, whose office represents the attacker, said the 19-year-old Cruz agreed to plead guilty if the prosecution will make not a death sentence and life imprisonment without the possibility of revision. Lawyers believe that this will avoid many years of trial and appeals that might disturb the families of the dead and injured.
According to the report, state attorney Michael Satz said at the weekend that he will announce his position “at the appropriate time”. But he noted that “this is definitely the type of case in which the death penalty”.
The Wall Street Journal writes that over the past two decades has decreased the number of adoption the number of death sentences in all States of the country, and polls indicate the public protest against such punishment, the state of Florida is actively applying this type of punishment. Currently in Florida, there are 348 sentenced to death, according to statistics, slightly less than in California.
