Measles in Odessa died an adult

Amid the outbreak of measles in Ukraine died another man is the second officially confirmed death from the disease. Information about the fatal case reported by the press service of the Ministry of health.

“Became aware of one death from measles. In Odessa died an adult. In General, with 2017 as a result of disease 7 persons died, including 4 children,” – said the Agency.

Ministry of health warns: the incubation period (the time when the disease symptoms have not yet manifested) measles ranges from 6 to 21 days, and then ill have a fever, a headache, runny nose and dry cough. Also enlarged lymph nodes and inflamed conjunctiva (seen in lacrimation, photophobia, and purulent discharge), and later the symptoms are diarrhea and vomiting.

“At day 4-5 of symptoms of the disease there is a red rash that starts on the scalp and face and then spreads all over the body. Disease with symptoms lasts to a month or more,” say the doctors.

They warn: measles can have serious complications – pneumonia, ear infection, encephalitis, and more that can lead to disability and even death.

“Measles not only sick children but also adults: under threat everyone who is not vaccinated. In case of contact with sick with measles, immediately call your doctor. Specific treatment for measles no, but you can prevent the disease. The only reliable way to protect against measles is vaccination,” he stressed physicians.

According to Ministry of health, cases of measles among the more than 85% not fully protected by vaccination (i.e., two doses of vaccine against measles, rubella and mumps).

On 15 January inLviv, about 74 people fell ill with measles, 49 of them children. In Kiev on the same date was recorded 87 cases (66 cases in children up to 17 years). In the Odessa region in the first days of January from complications from measles and died a child of five.
