The Foundation stone on the place where the planned installation of the monument to Marshal Georgy Zhukov in Odessa, dismantled public utilities under pressure of activists of nationalist organizations. Reported by the Ukrainian edition “Пушкинская.net”.
According to the publication, a memorial sign was already down in April, according to the law on de-communization, but then it was back to the same place. On the eve of two activists of the Patriotic organizations drew attention to this fact, the report said. Eventually the Foundation stone was removed again.
The initiator of the monument to Zhukov was organized by the Odessa branch of the Communist party of Ukraine (KPU). The Foundation stone was set on 3 October 2012, reports TASS. It in Russian language it was written that this place will be a monument to Marshal of Victory, hero of the Soviet Union Georgy Zhukov “from grateful veterans and residents of the hero city Odessa, with the support of the CC of the Communist party”. The activities of the Communist party banned in the country in 2015.
The package of laws on de-communization operating in Ukraine since may 2015. It involves the renaming of topographic objects, named after Russian and Soviet statesmen. The national memory Institute of Ukraine published a list of 520 historical figures whose activities are subject to this law. In particular, the country was renamed 987 settlements, and was demolished about 1500 monuments of Vladimir Lenin.
