UN officials call on the Russian authorities to release all the men who were detained in Chechnya in connection with their sexual orientation. In addition, human rights defenders United Nations asked Moscow to conduct a thorough and independent investigation related to the abuse of gays. The UN noted that homosexuals and bisexuals live in Chechnya, in perpetual fear, which is “fuelled by homophobic statements by representatives of the local authorities.”
The UN noted that gays not only beaten, but also tortured with electric shocks, forced to disclose the names of other gay men, and mocked them. Human rights activists have reported cases of abuse of homosexuals, and this offense was seen by law enforcement and security officials.
