The UK is preparing to launch its own, independent from the EU, sanctions regime, within which London will be able, in particular, to freeze the assets of persons suspected of violation of human rights. It is planned that the UK will announce its own sanctions mechanism in February, after the country’s withdrawal from the EU. After that London will get an opportunity to work in this field more quickly and decisively, without coordinating its sanctions with the 27 other EU countries.
The announcement of the sanctions mechanism in February-March may be followed by a list of specific individuals, which will apply restrictive measures. According to sources from the UK government, under the first wave of sanctions may fall the citizens of Russia, Libya, North Korea and Saudi Arabia.
