The us Congress has prepared a bill that would ban Russians from entering the U.S. because of the support of the current President of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro.
“The increased presence of Russian Federation in the Western hemisphere is of concern to the United States and allies in the region”, – stated in the text of the bill published on the Congress website.
Americans also wary of joint military exercises between Russia and Venezuela, held in December 2018, and the provision of a Latin American country loans both earlier and now, during the current political and economic crisis. In particular, Russia has recently provided a loan under sanctions Venezuelan oil company PDVSA.
In addition, the project mentioned that the regime of Maduro appealed to the Russian Federation – one of his strongest political allies – for financial support during the current economic crisis.
Not later than 120 days after the bill is passed the Secretary of state Michael Pompeo should submit to the appropriate congressional committees an assessment of the Russian-Venezuelan cooperation in the field of security and potential threats that such cooperation deals USA and countries of the Western hemisphere. During the next 30 days the Secretary will provide a strategy for solving the problem of Russian-Venezuelan cooperation.
As restrictive measures, the Congress proposes to ban the issuance of visas and entering the United States to persons “acting on behalf of the Russian government in direct support of the Venezuelan security forces.”
The law, if adopted, will have retrospective effect: foreigners accused of supporting Venezuela, may lose the already obtained right to enter the United States.
The authors of the draft law by the house of representatives member from the Democratic party Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. On February 28 the house of representatives has sent the document for consideration in the foreign Affairs Committee and the judiciary Committee of the U.S. Senate.
On 11 March, the US imposed sanctions on Russian-Venezuelan “Evrofinance Mosnarbank” for the relationship with the state oil Corporation PDVSA. Visa and MasterCard have suspended the membership of a credit institution in payment systems, which resulted in the lock Visa and MasterCard cards abroad and on the territory of the Russian Federation, including restriction of accepting Visa and MasterCard cards in Bank devices. In addition, since March 11, the Bank ceased to make payments in U.S. dollars.
The US imposed sanctions against PDVSA with the objective to increase pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro that he renounced his post in favor of opposition leader Juan Guido, proclaimed himself interim head of state on January 23.
