The Helsinki district court rejected the claim of a billionaire and a “friend of Putin” Boris Rotenberg to the Scandinavian banks, according to which he was required to pay him 70 thousand euros compensation for breach of service agreements due to U.S. sanctions. This was announced on Thursday, the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, citing the court’s decision.
In the lawsuit, Rothenberg emphasized that the actions of banks can “lead to complications in the conduct of Affairs in respect of various property [of the plaintiff]”. However, the court decided that “since the plaintiff, in his own words, is a billionaire, these things from the point of view of their economic situation cannot be considered as significantly influencing the situation.” In Rotenberg still have the opportunity to appeal this decision to the court of second instance, reports TASS.
In the lawsuit of billionaire filed in early October, it was said that the banks refused to transfer or receive payments from Rothenberg. For this reason, it was stated in the document, he was unable to pay the bills of the Finnish tax service, TSA and other agencies.
The billionaire also demanded that the court ordered the banks to resume its payments. Their demands, he proved among other things that because he has Finnish citizenship, he should have equal rights with other EU citizens. The lawsuit was transferred to three banks: Nordea, Danske Bank and OP Corporate Bank.
Boris Rotenberg is a member of the Board of Directors and co-owner of SMP Bank. He and his brother Arkady fell in 2014 in the U.S. sanctions lists because of the policy of the Russian Federation in relation to Ukraine, expressed, in particular, the annexation of Crimea and support of Pro-Russian militias fighting in the East of Ukraine under the flags of the DNI and LC.
