The Ambassador of Ukraine in Poland: We need to evaluate the role of UPA in history

Andriy Deshchitsa

Ukrainian Ambassador to Poland Andriy deshchitsa said that Ukraine should itself assess the place of the UPA in the process of formation of the Ukrainian state, and if some units of the UPA committed crimes against the civilian population, they should be condemned. This Deshchytsia said in an interview with BBC Ukraine.

According to the Ambassador, Ukraine since 2014 formed a new vision of historical policy, Poland needs to deal with that.

“We are bringing its position and hope for understanding. This does not always occur immediately, as they have new facts and events that Polish historians and politicians were not ready to accept. But it is a reality – the Ukrainian government has its own vision of historical policy. This vision of the new post-2014, and this must be considered. It will take some time,” – said deshchitsa.

He noted that the UPA in Poland is perceived negatively.

“We also need to understand the role of UPA in the history of the “Volyn tragedy.” Perhaps, the UPA units, who committed crimes against the civilian population. If it was, then it should be condemned. There are also examples of killings of civilians – poles, and Ukrainians, but in a larger number of poles”, – the Ambassador noted.

Recall the last time Ukraine and Poland have faced a number of problems and disputes in bilateral relations.

In the Polish Ministry of foreign Affairs believethat the historical dialogue with Ukraine stops the deficit decisions from the Ukrainian side. Moreover, according to the Deputy foreign Minister of Poland Bartosz Tsihotsky, decisions of Kiev are contrary to the statements of the Ukrainian authorities on strategic partnership countries.
