Russia wants six months the Donbass armed UN mission

Russia proposes to create an armed small arms, the UN mission to protect OSCE observers in the East of Ukraine six months after the withdrawal of troops and military equipment from the contact line in the Donbass. It is reported TASS with reference to the copy of the Russian draft resolution of the UN Security Council.

Russia wants the UN mission started to work after complete withdrawal of forces from the contact line. Its head, the project should report directly to the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

The mission should be armed with small arms and to ensure the safety of groups of SMM monitors, which around the clock monitoring in the areas of breeding effort.

The text States that the recommendations must be consistent “with the Ukrainian government and representatives of individual regions of Donetsk and Lugansk regions of Ukraine”.

5 September 2017, Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia saidthat Russia has sent to the Organization a draft resolution on the deployment of peacekeepers on the contact line in the Donbass. Russian President Vladimir Putin notedthat the presence of UN peacekeepers in the Donbass “would benefit the resolution of the conflict”, but then said that in his understanding we are talking about “people who ensure the safety of the OSCE mission,” and which “must be on the boundary line and no other areas.”

Ukraine has opposed the participation of Russia in the UN peacekeeping mission in the Donbass in the case that the decision to conduct such an operation were to be adopted.

Germany voted against the discussion of the issue of peacekeepers with the militants LDNR, and Poland believesthat peacekeepers should be placed on the Ukrainian-Russian border and not at the contact line, as proposed by Russia.
