The authorities of Uzbekistan stopped systematically force children to pick cotton on the plantations.

This is stated in the report of the International labour organization (ILO), published on the UN website.

Now children will be able to work on the plantations only on a voluntary basis. “The authorities prohibited forced to pick cotton schoolchildren, students, teachers, and medical professionals. Those who volunteered to harvest this year received a higher salary,” say representatives of the ILO.

The report was based on a 3 thousand interviews for which were made a representative sample of 2.6 million working in the country’s cotton pickers. Calls were made without warning.

Among the major challenges in the elimination of forced labour in the region the UN has called the demands of employers monetary compensation for the loss of free labor. According to the ILO, this is unacceptable.
