Hrynevych: “Language of the ghetto” may be subject to territorial claims

The Ukrainian language must bind to different regions of the country

The Minister of education and science, Liliya Hrynevych believes that Ukraine, which is densely populated by representatives of national minorities who do not speak the state language can become the object of territorial claims. She declared it on air of TV channel “1+1”, reports LB.ua.

“Any established “language of the ghetto” is always politically vulnerable territory for territorial claims. Look at what happened in the Crimea. In the Crimea did not have Ukrainian language”, – she said.

In an example, the Minister cited the situation when, in 2017, 75% of graduates of schools in Berehovo district of Transcarpathian region, which is a place of compact residence of the Hungarian minority, failed external independent testing, including due to the fact that not know the Ukrainian language.

In addition, she stressed that a significant part of the population of this territory do not speak Ukrainian.

According to the Minister, the official language connects different regions of the country.

According to Grinevich, the Ministry of education expects the conclusions of the Venice Commission on linguistic norms of the law “On education” will include some guidelines, as in the whole Ukraine has not violated any international obligations.

Recall, the PACE criticized the Ukrainian law on education.

On 25 September the President of Ukraine Poroshenko signed the Law “On education”, language which has caused concern in several countries: Poland, Romania, Hungary, Greece, Bulgaria.
