Hungary insists on the amendments to the law on education

Hungary will continue to refuse to support Ukraine’s European integration, if the law “On education” will not be changed. This was stated by the Minister of foreign Affairs of Hungary Peter Siarto following the meeting with Ukrainian foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin, according to the 112 Ukraine with reference to Associated Press.

According to Szijjártó, Budapest will continue to adhere to its position blocking further rapprochement of Ukraine with the European Union.

The Hungarian Minister also added that relations between Ukraine and Hungary is currently going through the worst crisis since 1991, when Ukraine gained independence.

Earlier it was reported that the head of the Ukrainian foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin at the meeting with Szijjártó emphasized that the law “On education” is fully consistent with international standards.

We will remind, the President Petro Poroshenko signed law of Ukraine No. 2145-VIII “On education” adopted by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on 5 September 2017.

A warning against him was expressed by Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Russia and Moldavia. In addition, Hungary has announced its intention to block Ukraine’s rapprochement with the European Union.

On 12 October the parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) during the debate adopted a resolution regarding the Ukrainian law “About education”. The Ukrainian authorities, in particular, urged to listen to the comments of the Venice Commission, as well as to consider “a more flexible model of” bilingual education taking into account the interests of those who belong to indigenous peoples and national minorities.

During the debate in PACE, many delegates accused Ukraine of the fact that she didn’t do it earlier, even before the adoption of the document. In fact, the law had a lot of questions. The speaker of the Estonian delegation to PACE, called the law “About education” is not realistic, and a member of the Moldovan delegation expressed the view that he denies the identity of more than 250 thousand Moldovans in Ukraine. From Hungary it was a statement that thus Ukraine itself destabilizie the situation in their country.
